Overview

The Kenan Institute offers a full-time, two-year predoctoral research associates program that prepares high-achieving recent college graduates to apply to Ph.D. business programs at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School or elsewhere through hands-on training in high-impact business research. The program serves as a training ground for participants to learn new skills in business research, develop a network of supportive Kenan-Flagler faculty and staff and receive Ph.D. program application support.

The position term runs from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021. Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume by Monday, April 22

2019-2021 Focus

The program’s current focus is on economic development, entrepreneurship and finance. The predoctoral research associate will be part of the Kenan Institute Research Services team, and will be tasked primarily with supporting the Kenan Institute’s newest initiative, CREATE. CREATE’s work centers on economic and community development, with a special interest in entrepreneurial and high-growth firms. Learn more about CREATE.

The research associate will have opportunities to work with the institute’s other affiliated centers, allowing them to learn more about the breadth of research and teaching opportunities that earning a Ph.D. in business can provide.

Program Benefits

The predoctoral research associate position is a full-time, two-year position with salary and full benefits, which includes UNC tuition waivers for up to three courses per academic year. The associate may further develop his/her skills in preparation for a Ph.D. program through available professional development opportunities, including conferences, seminars and short courses. Research associates may also take advantage of faculty mentorship when applying for Ph.D. programs or exploring other career opportunities.

Who Should Apply

The predoctoral research associates program encourages applicants from under-represented or non-typical backgrounds (personal, academic, etc.) who are considering a career in academia.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree at the start of the program (July 1). Preferred majors include economics, business, public policy, public administration, computer science, information science, mathematics or related fields. This list is not comprehensive, however; many technical fields, such as those in the sciences, will lend themselves to this opportunity.
